Sky Sports Cup

The draw for the quarter finals of the Sky Sports Cup was made on Tuesday afternoon:

Celtic v Glasgow City

Partick Thistle v Hibernian

Motherwell v Rangers

Boroughmuir Thistle v Aberdeen

Ties are to be played on Sunday 10 November, subject to change.

Rangers continued their defence of the trophy but were made to be patient when winning 3-0 away to Dundee Utd. The home side worked hard to stay in the game before three late goals saw Rangers home, Kirsty Howat breaking the deadlock with twelve minutes remaining before further strikes from Katie Wilkinson and Mia McAulay finally ended the home side’s resistance.

Last season’s beaten finalists Partick Thistle are in the quarter finals once again, thanks to a 3-2 victory over Spartans. Carla Boyce and Cara Henderson, the latter from the penalty spot, put Thistle two goals up in the opening half hour and after Eilidh Davies pulled one back for the visitors, Lucy Sinclair restored the advantage in first half injury time. Robyn McCafferty renewed hopes for Spartans as she reduced the arrears with seven minutes remaining but the Jags saw the game out to keep hopes alive of reaching the Final once again.

Celtic had a much smoother passage into the last eight, scoring seven times without reply at Montrose. Mathilde Carstens gave Celtic the lead in the eighteenth minute, before Saoirse Noonan bagged a brace and Kit Loferski scored either side of half time to leave them five goals ahead. Celya Barclais further increased their advantage and Morgan Cross rounded things off with the final goal, three minutes from time.

The tie of the round saw Hearts play host to Glasgow City and it was visitors who were to emerge as narrow 3-2 victors. Wilma Forsblom’s early strike for City was cancelled out ahead of half time by Olufolasade Adamolekun, Samantha van Diemen then put City back in front and an own goal by Eilidh Shore, six minutes from time, turned out to be the decisive one, despite Jackie Richards pulling a goal back for Hearts in injury time.

Hamilton Academical were moments away from claiming a SWPL 1 scalp when they led Motherwell by a Megan Quinn goal early in the second half but Laura Berry salvaged a draw for ‘Well when she equalised in injury time. Motherwell then took that momentum into the resulting penalty shootout to win 4-3 from the spot and book their place in the last eight.

Hibernian enjoyed a much safer day away to Queen’s Park, running out 7-0 winners at Ochilview Park. Linzi Taylor opened the scoring for Hibs, with Kathleen McGovern then netting twice and completing her hat-trick after the break. Lauren Doran-Barr also got on the scoresheet, before Eilidh Adams completed the tally by scoring a quickfire brace.

Aberdeen meanwhile ended the hopes of Gartcairn Women by beating them 2-0, Hannah Stewart giving them the lead from the penalty spot midway through the first half and she went on to seal the victory by scoring the second, nine minutes after half time.

The last remaining SWPL 2 team left in the competition are Boroughmuir Thistle, who secured their place in the quarter finals in some style, scoring eight times without reply against Livingston. Cara Borthwick put Thistle in front after nine minutes, with Maria Novoa-Torrente and Fiona Gibson adding further goals ahead of half time. After the break, Molly Orr-Love netted the fourth and Borthwick then completed her double, before substitute Emily Reid then took over the scoring by hitting a hat-trick in the final twenty minutes, the last of which came from the penalty spot.
