Moneys on fire

Moneyfields 6 Ashford Town (Middlesex) 3

Moneyfields moved into the Second Round of the Women's FA Cup with a superb performance to claim a 6-3 win over fellow FAWNL Division One opponents Ashford Town (Middlesex) at Winklebury Football Complex.

Trailing at the break, Moneys fired in five goals in 35 minutes to power into Round 2 for the first time.

Ashford took a second minute lead with a fine Brogan Moore shot from distance but the pattern of the opening half was mainly of home pressure and some close calls. Ashford defended bravely and visiting keeper Emma Vigolo made several good saves to preserve the advantage.

It took a perfect overlap and cross from Emma Moody finding the head of Charley Wilson-Wilton to finally break down the Ashford resistance on 35 minutes.

Ashford had threatened on the break throughout. Alissa Down was just over with a free kick and Anya Kinnane was wide with a header midway through the half. Ashley Cheatley  restored their advantage with a delightful solo goal, drifting past two defenders before aiming a precise finish past Grace Jenkins' dive on 41 minutes.

Moneys drew level within three minutes of the restart with Gemma Simmonds arriving at the far post to finish a move down the right. Soon after, they led for the first time courtesy of another solo effort of real class as Sophie Phelps ran past two challenges before tucking the ball wide of the advancing Vigolo.

Beth Burgess provided Wilson-Wilton with another inviting cross met with a second far post header for 4-2 before the hour.

The build up play from the hosts had been crisp and inventive since the start and resulted in further dangerous situations for the hard pressed Tangerine defence. Further strikes from Kau'Inohea Taylor and sub Kim Fuller completed a storming second period by Moneys.

Ashford had continued to contribute to a very entertaining match with attempts to turn the tide and were rewarded with a late consolation from Jordanne Hoesli-Atkins but, in truth, had run up against an inspired home team on the day.
