Martinez named WSL Player of the Month

The winners of the Barclays Women’s Super League awards for March have now been confirmed.

Decided by a combination of the public and a panel of experts, the results of March’s votes are as follows.

Firstly, West Ham United’s Shekiera Martinez has been named as Player of the Month, becoming the first ever Hammers player to win the award.

Having returned to the Barclays WSL at the turn of the year following a loan spell in Germany, the forward found the back of the net three times last month – once in a 4-3 reverse to Arsenal, followed by a brace in a 2-2 draw against Chelsea at Kingsmeadow, including a dramatic late equaliser.

The striker saw off competition from Aggie Beever-Jones, Mariona Caldentey, Leah Galton, Maya Le Tissier, Vivianne Miedema and Alessia Russo to take the award.

Renée Slegers meanwhile made it back-to-back Manager of the Month awards, securing the trophy for the third time this season (December, February and March), beating Manchester United boss Marc Skinner and West Ham’s Rehanne Skinner to the accolade.

Finally, Grace Clinton’s strike against Aston Villa has been voted as Goal of the Month, with the Manchester United midfielder’s effort against the Villans last month coming out on top in the voting polls.

Finding the back of the net from distance, Clinton’s stunner was voted as March’s winning strike, defeating Melvine Malard, Sandy Baltimore, Yuka Momiki, Fuka Nagano, Ashleigh Weerden, Mariona Caldentey, Beth Mead and Shekiera Martinez.
