Kassem treble lifts Chairgirls

Winchester City Flyers 0 Wycombe Wanderers 4

A second half hat-trick by Eman Kassem was the highlight as Wycombe Wanderers continued their climb up the Southern Region Premier Division table with a 4-0 away win against Winchester City Flyers.

This outcome looked unlikely after a goalless even first period of few clear cut chances but Kassem's sharp finishing proved the difference.

 

Both teams came into the match on the back of high scoring County Cup wins but defences were on top for much of the first half. Wycombe's Kayla Potter set up Jess Watkins for a shot but Sam Burt made a goal saving block on 12 minutes.

 

Flyers' best move saw Annie Northwood find Laura da Silva closing in on goal but her shot was blocked by a timely challenge from Ashleigh Harte on 17 minutes. Emily McDonough made good progress down the left at times for the hosts while the Chairgirls also threatened with crosses but the score was deservedly even at the break.

 

The visitors took the lead within a minute of the restart when Kassem connected perfectly to volley home Potter's cross from the right. Flyers were close to levelling when Libby Wilkinson's corner led to a massive scramble in front of keeper Amber Taylor but somehow the ball stayed out .

 

Kassem doubled the lead with a sharp header on 74 minutes which keeper Shannon White parried on to the post before the ball dropped into the net. The third came from a Danielle Puddefoot inswinging corner touched home by Watkins on the far post with ten minutes to go.

 

Kassem completed her hat-trick by taking advantage of a defensive error to run through and finish past the advancing White on 87 minutes to give Wycombe a four-goal haul to take back to Buckinghamshire.

 

The result was harsh on Flyers who had played well and competed strongly throughout but were undone by good finishing and a strong all round team effort from the winners.
