Guildford City 0 Milford & Witley 4
Milford & Witley scored two in each half to claim a victory over Guildford City in their Surrey County Women's League match at Horsley FC.
The brand new Guildford City team, playing only their second match with a very young squad, gave a good account of themselves but were beaten by a strong Milford display.
The revived Surrey County League has a single division and comprises teams who had previously played in other leagues, in Milford's case the South East Counties League, as well as newly created clubs like Guildford City.
City had the first chance in the opening minute with a Nadine Clarke free kick saved by Milford keeper Holly Nunn. Becca Singleton was a constant threat for the visitors but it was Adie Blanchard who opened the scoring after a clearance was blocked.
Guildford keeper Morgan Palmer, who had a fine first half, denied Singleton with a brave block then turned another goalbound effort away. However she could do nothing about the second goal when a right wing cross fell nicely for Lucy Cook to finish after her first effort was blocked on 25 minutes.
Guildford had plenty of promising moves of their own in an exciting half. Millie Hackney down the right in particular, created some good openings with crosses and Nunn was forced into saves on several occasions. However it was Milford who nearly added a third with a Blanchard header from a free kick which struck the bar and fell into Palmer's grasp.
The third Milford goal came soon after the restart, Scarlett Campbell turning home another well delivered cross on 51 minutes. Palmer's afternoon came to an unfortunate end as a result of injury caused by an extremely brave double save at an attacker's feet midway through the half.
Skipper Singleton got the goal her efforts deserved from the penalty spot on 81 minutes. City kept on attacking to get the goal they certainly deserved but the final touch always eluded them and Milford also defended their clean sheet very well.
Both teams had contributed fully to a good contest but Milford and Witley's greater experience and firepower decided the outcome.
