Southampton Women Res 1 Wycombe Wanderers 3
Wycombe Wanderers set up a Southern Region League Chairman's Cup Final encounter with Abingdon Town after beating Southampton Women's Reserves by three goals to one at Winklebury.
A good team performance saw the Premier Division club home against a spirited Southampton side from Division One.
Wycombe made the best possible start, going ahead in the third minute when a chipped ball through the middle found Tara Woodward running through to finish powerfully past home keeper Lauren Sayler.
The hosts were soon into their stride however and equalised on 15 minutes. Kayleigh Tonks got clear on the right and fired in a low shot which Hannah Cox did well to save but the ball ran loose for Fay Roberts to turn home.
Wycombe continued to look dangerous with early passes through to willing front runners whilst Southampton were more intricate in their build up play in a good contest.
Southampton's Sarah Bradshaw went close with a 25-yard free kick just over on 24 minutes but it was the visitors who regained the lead with a well worked goal just before the half hour. Rachel Southby got free on the left and sent in a precise low cross for Sam Jackson to finish with a powerful first time effort from ten yards.
Leading at the break, Wycombe were close to a third when Woodward again got free to run in on goal but the advancing Sayler did enough to make the visiting attacker shoot wide. The Southampton keeper then made a fine full length save to deny skipper Charlotte Bagshaw but the crucial third Wycombe goal was not long delayed.
On 63 minutes, Southby had a shot well saved by Sayler but the ball ran loose for sub Christina O'Connor to score from a tight angle.
Southampton pushed forward, putting considerable pressure on the Chairgirls defence but Cox was well protected by her back four throughout and was rarely called into action.
Wycombe were always quick on the counter and Woodward drew another fine save from Sayler with a downward far post header.
As the match went into added time, Southampton went close to reducing the arrears with a fine 25-yarder from sub Siena Millen but the ball rebounded to safety of Cox's bar.
Wycombe saw out time to claim a deserved victory and a Chairman's Cup clash with already promoted Division One leaders Abingdon Town who had clinched their spot with victory over Abbey Rangers a fortnight ago. Let us all hope that this intriguing encounter will eventually take place in the current difficult and worrying situation.
