St Ives storm to league title

Regional Premier Eastern News - St Ives storm to league title - 11 May 2019 - Women's Football News

St Ives Town have taken Division One of the Eastern Region League by storm this season, a year after winning promotion from the S-Tech Cambridgeshire Women's League.

St Ives recently clinched the league title with an unbeaten record, and indeed have been unbeaten in league matches at any level since September 2017.

The season started with a 6-1 win at home to Lawford and the good results continued through the season! Notable results were a 5-4 win over Hoddesdon Owls in the League Cup after being 4-1 down, a narrow 1-0 defeat in the County Cup away to FA Women's National League side Cambridge United and in the league, two of the latest results were particularly important - a 2-0 win over second placed Bowers & Pitsea and a 1-0 win over Newmarket Town to seal the league title.

St Ives Town are managed by Darren Marjoram and he is assisted by Andy Markwell and Martin Barratt. "We have had a few captains this season," he told Women's Soccer Scene. "The current captain is Tierney Coulson, but Ellie Brown and Hannah Seymour-Shove have also been captain. Our leading goalscorers to date are Tierney Coulson with 22, Georgia Stancombe with 14, Hannah Seymour-Shove with 8, Katie Stancombe with 8 and Emily Smith with 7. Emily Smith signed a couple of months into the season from Cambridge United, and has scored the winning goals in three of the last four games!

"Important roles on the pitch have been played by every single member of the squad really. Probably in terms of making a particular impact, it's worth highlighting Emily Smith for the reasons stated above, and Ruth Fox who has been fantastic for us since joining in late January.

"Off the pitch, there are a few people who definitely deserve a mention. Marina Howlett is our secretary and has handled all our player signings, sometimes with very little notice! Gareth Chapman has prepared fantastic pitches for us all season, often starting very early on a Sunday morning to give us the best chance possible of playing the way we want to. Also, our Commercial Director, Mark Taylor, who has secured sponsorship deals with local companies such as home kit sponsor MovewithUs and away kit sponsor Leeds Day Solicitors.

"Probably more important than anyone else in terms of important roles that have contributed to our success, it has to be Chairman Gary Clarke and his wife Maureen. These two have backed the ladies in every way possible, and are at virtually every game helping with everything from providing the food, running the bar and sponsoring the tracksuits. Without them, nothing would have been possible. They were both heavily involved in setting the team up, along with one of our players, Sasha Smith."
