 Women's Football WNL Division 1 South West News - 11 May 2019
Southampton Women 0 Buckland Athletic 0
Southampton Women and Buckland Athletic finished their seasons with a hard fought scoreless draw at Blackfield and Langley FC.
Both clubs have had fine seasons in the FAWNL Division One South West and reached the final their respective County FA Cups, losing narrowly to higher division opposition.
Buckland await the outcome of an unplayed match to probably claim third place in their debut season at this level after winning promotion from the South West Women's League twelve months ago, whilst Southampton finished runners-up for the second year in a row, this time to an outstanding Keynsham Town team.
Southampton dominated possession throughout the match but were rarely able to break down a well organised and disciplined Buckland defence. The visitors were also dangerous on the break and had a golden opportunity to clinch the three points late on despite going down to ten players after an injury to Jana Richards.
Southampton put together some fine passing moves from midfield in the first half, constantly opening up space on the wings through Kirsty Whitton, Phillipa Holden and Manu Naptra.
However, despite some dangerous crosses, the Buckland defence was very solid and keeper Abbi Bond faultless in her handling.
At the other end, Issy Foster twice had to be quick off her line to save from Richards after good crosses had found the Buckland attacker clear on goal.
The second half continued in similar fashion with Southampton frequently caught offside or failing with the final pass after good build up.
Buckland had a chance to take the lead on 75 minutes when Sarah Stacey charged down keeper Foster's clearance and was through on goal, but shot over an empty net.
Southampton continued to press forward with Buckland by now down to ten but were not able to fashion a late winner despite some good work by Hannah Samuels going forward from defence.
In truth, the points being shared was probably the right outcome after a well contested match.
Southampton Women:
Issy Foster, Manuela Naprta, Hannah Samuels, Kirsty Whitton, Natasha Angel, Chelsie Hay, Rosie Kirby, Kayleigh Tonks, Emma Pinner, Roxanne Lee-Stewart, Philippa Holden. Subs not used: Jennifer King, Tia Hooper, Laura da Silva.
Buckland Athletic:
Abbi Bond, Carla Staddon, Jana Richards, Alex Sheppard, Jodie Chubb, Sarah Smith, Maria Warman, Abigail Meyer, Sarah Stacey, Rebecca Halford, Natalie Warman.
