Wales go down in opener
 Women's Football Wales International News - 5 Oct 2018
Wales started their 2019 UEFA Women's U19 Qualifying Round campaign with a 2-1 defeat to Iceland as two second half headers secured the three points for the Scandinavians.
Iceland started sharply and were unlucky not to take the lead in the second minute as Sveindis Jynsdyttir's long range free kick hit the crossbar.
Wales soon settled into the game and Lauren Smith's side had chances of their own as Ella Powell found herself forcing the Icelandic keeper Anita Gupmundsdyttir into action. Despite the chances, Iceland had the final say of the half, almost taking the lead from another long range effort by Jynsdyttir which hit Olivia Clark's crossbar.
After a first half in which both teams went at each other hammer and tongs, it was Iceland that broke the deadlock early in the second. A whipped cross into the box met the head of Hlin Eiríksdóttir who found the back of the net. The opening goal started a ten minute period of madness as Iceland doubled their lead through another header, this time by captain Alexandra Jóhannsdóttir.
However, the response was instant from the young dragons. Straight from the kick off, Tamsyn Sibanda launched the ball from 80 yards out, unbelievably flying over her team mates and the opposition keeper into the back of the net.
The goal rejuvenated Wales and Lauren Smith's side instantly pressed high looking for the equaliser. Elise Hughes found herself in front of goal after some impressive wide play by substitute Emily Jones but her driven shot was saved by the Icelandic keeper to deny the equaliser. Wales were unable to break down the organised Icelandic defence but Lauren Smith's side will now look ahead to their next game in the group as they face Belgium on Friday.
Wales: Olivia Clark, Ffion Morgan, Lily Woodham, Lucia Carpanini, Amina Vine, Tamsyn Sibanda, Ella Powell (sub Rhianne Oakley 76mins), Chloe Williams, Grace Horrell (sub Emily Jones 59mins), Elise Hughes, Cassia Pike.
