English County and other Leagues News - Redcar last the distance - 13 Jun 2018 - Women's Football News

It has been a memorable season for Redcar Town as they carried off the North Riding Women's League title by a margin of six clear points.

Redcar started the season with a combined team from the remaining Redcar players and the joining players from Stokesley Ladies. They had a good start to the season with a SSE Women's FA Cup win away at Workington Reds and a comfortable win at home in the league over Ripon City.

They were then unlucky to lose in the Second Round Qualifying of the FA Cup away at Alnwick Town, conceding an 88th minute penalty to go out 1-0.

The next five league games were won, including a 3-2 home win over eventual runners-up South Park Rangers. The club then had a turnaround of players and Head Coach, with Lee Round appointed to the role of Head Coach, and they went from strength to strength from that point, winning nine league games whilst drawing and losing just once.

"We had a really hard run in against the three teams who, if they beat us, could win the league," assistant coach and secretary Ian Enderwick told Women's Soccer Scene. "After each win for us, they went out of title race.

"We won 1-0 away to Catterick Garrison, 4-2 against Poppleton and finally, in the league decider, South Park Rangers needed a win and we required a draw, and we won 6-2 on their pitch, which is the best grass pitch we have in the league.

"Lee had targeted the double for this season and he and the ladies achieved this target by playing some great passing football and digging in with a great team spirit when the need arised.
Each and every one of the players played their part of this momentous season for us, we picked up a few long term injuries on the way and the other squad members filled in seamlessly to earn the right to be League and Cup winners."

The team is captained by Paula Lowe, whilst Jess Round had a great season, scoring 44 league goals and a further four in the Cup, finding the net in every round including two in the Final.

"Our entertainment officer Michelle Coleman plays an important role at the club, organising our fundraiser race night and making sure we are a close knit squad," added Enderwick. "Also a thank you to Derek Hartas who runs our website.

"Our best performance of the season has got to be in the semi finals of the County Cup, where we won 2-0 against Boro Rangers from the division above us and, of course, the Cup Final win over York City who play three leagues above and had won it for the last two seasons. We led twice, to be pegged back both times, then scored a wonder goal to win it. The best league result was probably when we won 1-0 away to Catterick, a really hard fought win."
