English County and other Leagues News - Southampton win top two clash - 11 May 2018 - Women's Football NewsMoneyfields 0 Southampton FC Women 3
The top two teams in the Hampshire County League Division One met at Moneyfields FC and it was visitors Southampton FC Women who took the honours with a fine 3-0 win.
The home team, unbeaten in the league and Portsmouth DFA Cup winners in their first season, could have clinched the title with a win, but were undone by three high quality goals and a very solid Southampton defence which coped with everything Moneyfields threw at them.
The Southampton opener was a superb long range strike by Sam Burt into the top right corner of Courtney Trodd's goal on 16 minutes. Chloe Newton nearly set up a second shortly after, with Harriet Eastham's shot being blocked.
Southampton continued to dominate with Newton twice going close on 26 and 27 minutes.
Moneyfields finally got a sight on goal through clever play from skipper Charley Wilson, but her shot on 41 minutes flew over. Lucianne Johnson had another shot just over from long range as the hosts finished the half well.
Crucially, Newton doubled Southampton's advantage when breaking clear on 47 minutes and curling a fine finish wide of Trodd from the edge of the area. Trodd then denied Newton with a fingertip save on 58 minutes after a defensive mix up.
Moneyfields nearly reduced the arrears when Wilson had a shot cleared off the line as she followed up a corner which was half cleared on 67 minutes and the same player was then denied by a good save as the home team pushed on. Despite numerous good crosses, it was always a Southampton head or foot which met the ball and the visitors were fast and dangerous on the counter.
Newton had gone close again with a shot on the turn but it was Chloe Podger who settled the match with another super finish from the right edge of the area on 89 minutes for an impressive win which leaves Southampton with the title in their grasp with one match to play, against Gosport Borough this week.
Before that, there is a Hampshire FA Cup Final on Thursday against Portsmouth to go with their HCWL Invitation Cup win last month in a successful first season for Southampton FC Women.
