Colchester United's all-conquering Female Academy cemented their claim as the country's best by winning the British Colleges Elite League Play-Off Final on a glorious sunny day at Doncaster Rovers' Keepmoat Stadium.
As BCS Elite East Division Champions, the young U's took on Midlands Division Champions, Reading's John Madjeski Academy and had the title all but won in a crushing first half performance. A stunning hat-trick from captain Maegen Doyle and a brace by Lily Mellors saw Colchester lead 5-0 at the interval before Sian Fagg made it six shortly after the break, with Reading able to earn a late consolation direct from a corner.
Doyle was deservedly named player of the match before lifting the cup which will join this season's English Schools FA U-18 National Cup and BCS Elite League East silverware in the Colchester Female Academy's crowded trophy cabinet.
Colchester will look for one more big effort this coming Wednesday as they look to complete an unprecedented 'quadruple' of major domestic college honours in a showdown with Arsenal Ladies Oakland College Academy side in the Final of the BCS National Cup Competition at Burton Albion's Pirelli Stadium.
Applications to be part of the highly successful Colchester United Female Academy, run in partnership with Thurstable School and Colchester United Community Sports Trust, are now being taken for the 2011-12 season. Any young female players aged 16-18 with a good playing background looking to combine an elite level football programme with full time academic study are encouraged to contact Academy Manager David Coyle on (07872) 542300 or by e-mail at email@example.com to request an information pack.
