Bristol Academy 1 (Yorston 90) Liverpool 1 (Evans 42)
A goal deep into injury time gave Bristol Academy their first point of the FA WSL season as they earned themselves a 1-1 draw against Liverpool at Stoke Gifford.
Captain Corinne Yorston was credited with the equaliser but defeat would have been very harsh on the home side and it brought reward for Academy's persistence as they finally managed to cancel out Michelle Evans' well struck first half opener.
Buoyed by their 3-0 F.A.Women's Cup semi final against the Reds six days earlier, Academy started confidently with Jaz Matthews heading just over from a Helen Bleazard cross. Jessica Fishlock then made her way through on goal after dispossessing Sam Chappell but her shot was saved by Andrea Worrall.
Liverpool produced their first opportunity when Suzanne Lappin sent a fierce shot inches over but Academy continued to dominate matters with Fishlock putting an effort wide from a Bleazard corner.
Bleazard was in blistering form on the right and another excellent run and cross ought to have brought an opening goal but Matthews headed over from six yards.
Liverpool weathered the storm, becoming more of an attacking force as the half wore on and they took the lead three minutes ahead of the interval. There seemed little danger as Evans tried her luck from 25 yards but a perfectly executed volley gave Siobhan Chamberlain no chance as it sailed into the corner of the net.
Academy hit back with a long range effort of their own from Katie Daley which was well held by Worrall. Liverpool could then have doubled their lead on the stroke of half time as Ruesha Littlejohn tricked her way to the line and crossed but Katie Brusell could not direct her header on target.
Worrall was again called into action early in the second half with another fine save, tipping the ball over the bar when a Yorston free kick came off Caroline Charlton's head. Lillie Billson, minutes after coming on as a substitute, then produced a shot which was well gathered low down by Worrall.
Academy began to press more and more as Liverpool became content to sit on their one goal lead and try and hit on the counter attack.
Ann Marie Heatherson shot wide as Academy's frustration began to grow, then Fishlock had a header blocked before dragging the rebound wide of the post.
Liverpool continued to defend stoutly, blocking numerous attempts on goal by opponents, but their resistance was finally broken during injury time. Academy had won a series of corners throughout the game and one eventually led to an equaliser, Bleazard's kick intially being headed against the post by Anouk Hoogendijk but the rebound fell for Grace McCatty whose shot was touched on into the net by Yorston to give her side their first point of the season.
