Rosie's double wonder gives Park cup

Rosie's double wonder gives Park cup - 11 Apr 2011 - Women's Football NewsSouth Park 2 Godalming Town 0
South Park Ladies, from Reigate, won the Surrey County League Challenge Cup at Merstham on Sunday.

The club is in its first season at this level and currently lead the County League but their first silverware was achieved in front of an enthusiastic crowd of around 250 spectators, at the expense of Godalming Town. The teams had shared eight goals in a league encounter two weeks ago, but this time Park were sharper in front of goal.

The match was notable for an opening goal in an estimated 7 SECONDS after kick off as Rosie Lethbridge finished a four player move from 15 yards. The same player nearly added another with a powerful shot just over from wide right before Godalming settled into the match and dominated most of the rest of the half. A 40-yard free kick was well saved by Park keeper Louise Williams and Godalming got in a number of good crosses which tested Shanice Moore and Leah Webb at the heart of Park's defence.

However it was South Park who doubled their lead with an excellent finish by Lethbridge, who instantly measured a 30-yard lob into Natalie De-Merrist's goal one minute before the break. It had been a fine display by both teams and Godalming were unlucky to trail by two opportunist goals.

The second half was slightly less intense as the warm morning and the first half efforts took their toll. Godalming had a goal ruled out for offside on 55 minutes but, hard as they tried, were unable to test Williams again till deep into added time. Lethbridge went very close to completing her hat-trick with De-Merrist saving bravely at point blank range and another effort cleared off the line. Park's Charlotte Barnham also went close when hitting the bar with a header from Rebecca Nesbitt's corner on 80 minutes.

South Park deserved their win but both sides contributed to a fine advert for the Surrey County Womens League, played in a good spirit in front of a large and supportive crowd.
