 Women's Football News 29 Mar 2011

City back on course - 29 Mar 2011 - Women's Football NewsManchester City got back to winning ways in the Northern Division as they defeated Preston North End 2-0.

Carly Bayley and Krystle Johnston netted the goals to keep City three points clear at the top, with five matches left to play.

Aston Villa made it seven wins on the trot when they followed up their midweek success at Coventry by beating Leicester City 3-2. The Villains scored with just one minute on the clock when Erin Vaughan stabbed home an Emma Follis corner. Leicester levelled on 42 minutes when Courtney Sweetman-Kirk fired home from a Chloe Jones pass but a minute later, Villa were back in front when City's unfortunate full back, Annabel Johnson, put through her own net from a Vaughan free kick.

Natalie Gibson made it three for the Villa on 62 minutes with a 20-yard shot. Natasha Meade gave City a lifeline in the 82nd minute with a fine effort and in injury time a header by City's Sweetman-Kirk from a Meade corner was cleared off the line by a Villa defender to give them the points in this Midlands derby.

Coventry City bounced back from their midweek defeat to beat Curzon Ashton 2-1 and keep their promotion aspirations alive. Curzon, who remain at the foot of the table, took a first half lead through Issy Hayes but they were condemned to another narrow defeat as Karen Clough scored a goal in each half to secure a win for the Sky Blues.

Derby County's challenge received a huge blow but Newcastle Utd gave their survival hopes a boost with a vital 2-1 victory. The first half ended goalless before Hannah Ward gave Derby the lead but Newcastle fought back to take the points with goals from Beth Gardener and Jess Havelock.

Rochdale climbed into a mid-table position and leapfrogged Leeds City Vixens by beating them 1-0, Sarah Buffel scoring the only goal of the game in the 27th minute after Keeleigh Savage's initial shot had been saved.
