Portugal 3 (Couto 11,60, Fernandes 18) Wales 1 (Dykes 42)
Wales were defeated 3-1 by tournament hosts Portugal in their first match of the Algarve Cup at the Estadio Municipal VRS Antonio.
Portugal took an early lead with a header from the experienced Carla Couto eleven minutes in. Captain Edite Fernandes followed up with second, seven minutes later when she managed to block an attempted clearance and capitalised on Wales goalkeeper Rhian Nokes being off her line.
Not to be outdone, Wales persisted in seeking a gap in the strong Portuguese defence and were rewarded with a strike from Loren Dykes just before half time, the winger's third international goal reducing the arrears to 2-1 going into the interval.
Jarmo Matikainen made a change at the break with Kerrie Manley replacing Kylie Davies in defence but Portugal continued to look the dominant side in the second half, restoring the two-goal advantage on the hour mark as Couto grabbed her second goal.
The gap could have been widened shortly after, were it not for a great save by Nokes who tipped a powerful long range shot just over the bar. Both sides made further substitutions but there were no further goals and Wales will be hoping for better fortunes when they play Romania on Friday.
Wales: Rhian Nokes, Nia Jones (sub Sally Wade 63mins), Sophie Ingle, Emma Jones, Kylie Davies (sub Kerrie Manley 45mins), Michelle Green, Loren Dykes, Cheryl Foster (sub Emma Plewa 63mins), Helen Lander, Gwennan Harries, Jessica Fishlock. Subs not used: Gemma Border, Jasmin Dutton, Sarah Adams, Josie Green, Laura May Walkley.
