A title showdown between the two contenders in the Thames Valley League Division Three North took place at Ducklington, near Witney on Sunday. The hosts, affectionately known as the 'Duck Ladies' and their rivals, City Belles, have beaten every other team they have played so far home and away in a nine team division and Sunday's encounter was the return leg of the 2-2 draw they had fought out earlier in the season. Ducklington needed to win to clinch the title, whereas City Belles still have one double header match to play next Sunday. With a superior goal difference, City Belles had the advantage of making do with a draw and then trying to clinch the title with two wins against Chiltern Saints next week. The match was brought forward to a midday start to enable some players to attend the Blue Square Conference Premier play off at Wembley involving Oxford United at 5pm. The game was of a good standard between teams clearly able to compete at a higher level. City Belles recently contested the Junior final of the Berks & Bucks Cup, having defeated higher division teams on the way whilst Ducklington were semi finalists in the Oxfordshire Cup, losing only 1-0 to Southern Regional Oxford Utd. Both teams played a passing game and created chances throughout the match, with the locals finding the woodwork in the first half and City Belles denied by a brilliant goal line clearance and having a penalty claim denied in the final seconds. A very even match between two worthy teams ended goalless and it is City Belles who have the chance to clinch the title and promotion to Division Two next Sunday, although both teams deserve the honour after near perfect seasons.
