Arlesey Town faced one of the biggest matches in their history on Sunday when they played their penultimate match of this season's campaign against Billericay Town. Before the match, Arlesey lay on top of the Eastern Region League Division One South with 40 points, with Billericay third on 37 and both teams - with two matches left to play - were able to secure promotion by winning the tie. The match started as a very nervous affair for the Arlesey team with Billericay pressing hard for a win. Arlesey were on the back foot but on the 20th minute, a long ball was played up to Hamplova who switched the play over to the right flank. Whitehead made a late run from deep down the right to meet the ball in the Billericay area for a tap in to put Arlesey ahead. Five minutes later, Pidgeon picked the ball up in midfield and made a surging run past the Billericay defence and scored with a well placed strike. Arlesey should have been in the driving seat but just two minutes later Billericay worked the ball well across the pitch for their striker to have a shot in the Arlesey area to pull a goal back. The remainder of the game was played out nervously by Arlesey with Billericay dominating possession but unable to create the all important chance. Arlesey hit hard on the break and had opportunities to make the game safe but were unable to do so. The game finished with Arlesey the victors, meaning they are guaranteed promotion to the Premier Division for the first time in their history! Next week Arlesey face Brentwood Town at home for the final match of the season and the title decider. Arlesey are just two points ahead of Brentwood, who are also promoted, so a win or draw would see them collect the trophy. Brentwood previous beat Arlesey 2-1 during this seasons campaign - so it will be all to play for!
