Alphington lifted the Westward Developments Devon Womens League Cup at Exmouth on Sunday but it took a close run and exciting 120 minutes of football before they could achieve this feat with a 3-1 victory over Exeter & Tedburn Rangers. Exeter & Tedburn spurned an early chance to take the lead as Becky Hazell sent a penalty kick wide of the post after Amber Corcutt had been upended in the area. Rangers then took the lead on the half hour when a Lorna Thompson shot hit the back of the net. Shortly before half time, Amber Corcutt forced a great save from Alphington goalkeeper Ashleigh Brown but blasted the rebound wide of goal when a controlled tap would have doubled Rangers' lead. Rangers held their 1-0 advantage until 87 minutes, when Laura Burwood took advantage of a defensive error outside the penalty area by firing home to make it all square and take the match to extra time. With two minutes remaining in the first period of extra time, Alphington took the lead after a cross-shot from Jodie Millett evaded the Rangers defenders and wound up crossing the line low and wide of Rangers' keeper Sarah Godbeer. Alphington put the result beyond doubt with three minutes of extra time remaining when Gemma Aspinall headed in from a corner, leaving them 3-1 winners in their first cup final appearance.
