Derby County have retained their Premier League status following their 3-2 win away to Aston Villa. With Sheffield Wednesday a point ahead on completion of their league fixtures, Derby needed two points from their final two games in order to climb out of the relegation zone at the end of their first season playing at this level. Although the Rams played well in the first half, two goals from Carly Davies - one from the penalty spot - led to a 2-0 lead for Aston Villa and it began to look as if the Rams' final game away to Luton Town would be the decider. However, Derby dug deep and battled for every ball, eventually grabbing a goal back before the interval to put them in with a chance. As the second half wore on, chances kept coming, but a well worked opening down the right ended with Emily Jeffery's shot cleared of the line and Marie Wayne's shot dipping just over the bar. Persistence paid off however, as with only fifteen minutes left Jo Scully forced home the equaliser and then Emily Jeffery hit a scorching effort from long range to put Derby ahead. The final six minutes were tense and Derby goalkeeper Jenny Simpson made a great save in the dying minutes to tip the ball over the bar. Derby held out for three crucial points and, as things stand, it is Sheffield Wednesday who join Luton Town in the relegation places from the Northern Division.
