![]() Whitley Bay have taken over the baton in the North and their 10-2 victory against an injury-hit Birtley Town has set up a fascinating Third Round Qualifying clash against Sheffield FC. Sheffield FC is the oldest football Club in the World, formed in 1857. The women's team was formed in 2003 when Norton Ladies affiliated with the Club, a process brought about by manager Helen Mitchell. The team has been transformed over the last six seasons to become one of the top three teams in Sheffield. They have finished as league Champions or runners-up in each of the last four seasons and were North East League Division One South Champions in 2007-08, the same season that Whitley Bay won Division One North. Sheffield currently play in the Premier Division of the North East League and are in fourth place, with Whitley as current leaders. Last season Sheffield were the league runners-up, with Whitley just one place behind. "We have a huge respect for Whitley Bay," said Sheffield manager Helen Mitchell. "They are a very professionally run Club who play football the way it should be played. The games we have played against them in the past have been wonderful games to watch: exciting, high quality, very competitive, but always fair. We fully expect the same this Sunday. It should be a great occasion, regardless of who wins." Nigel Hughes undertakes the role of assistant manager and Michelle Fletcher is captain. The squad includes former Doncaster Belles defender Liz Gomersall and key players include Lisa Giampalma and strike duo Kerry Parkin and Clare Holmes. This is set to be one of the ties of the round and an excellent match is in prospect, taking place at Sheffield FC's Bright Finance Stadium.
