![]() Birtley Town have taken over the baton for the North after they won 3-0 against Gateshead Rutherford Ravens to progress to the Second Round Qualifying this Sunday. Birtley have landed themselves a plum draw at home to Whitley Bay, who have established themselves as cup fighters in recent seasons. Whitley Bay FC Women was formed in 2005 and joined the Durham & Northumberland County League. They have since progressed to the Premier Division of the North East League which they currently top, being unbeaten since the start of the season. Whitley gained national recognition in 2006-07 when they reached the Fourth Round of the F.A.Women's Cup, being the last Regional League team left in the competition, before they were eventually beaten 2-1 in extra time by Premier League side Tranmere Rovers. Manager Colin Phillips has put together a very strong squad at the club which includes former Doncaster Rovers Belles midfielder Julie Twaddle. The likes of Mel Carr, Lisa Coleman, Kerry Davison and Sarah Coleman amongst others have Premier League experience and other key players include winger Rachel Kay as well as captain and prolific striker Kirsty Hunter, who recently scored her 150th goal for the club. Birtley Town FC will host the tie and, although Whitley will start off as favourites, this promises to be an interesting clash between two teams going well in their respective divisions.
