We battled really well - Rhian
 Women's Football News 22 Sep 2009

We battled really well - Rhian - 22 Sep 2009 - Women's Football NewsRhian Nokes admitted that she and her Wales team mates were bitterly disappointed following their 1-0 defeat by Belgium in their opening World Cup qualifying group match.

Wales went down to a goal deep into injury time and Rhian told Women's Soccer Scene afterwards: "I thought we battled really well and gave everything but conceded a sloppy goal in the last few seconds."

Rhian had a fine game in goal but remained modest about her performance. "I always think that's my job," she replied, "the manager has faith in me and that's why he puts me in goal. If I can be positive and keep the ball out then it gives my defence more confidence and they're not scared if a player breaks through. The more saves I make in game, the more it helps the other players."

Wales had been on the back foot during the first half but greatly improved their display after the break. "We sat down at half time and sorted out where we needed to improve," said Rhian. "In the second half we were a different team - our wingers attacked more and got at them and we were just unlucky in front of goal."

The crucial moment of the game came when Gwennan Harries' well struck volley hit the post. "Gwen hit a fabulous shot and I thought it was in," Rhian admitted, "but it didn't cross the line so that's just one of those things."

Rhian herself was then brought into action again with a superb diving save to prevent Majorie De Rammelaere from giving Belgium the lead. "At the time I thought that it would keep the team in it a 0-0 draw and I go home as the hero but as it was they scored a few minutes later," she said.

"Everyone's devastated right now but it's the manager's job to pick us up and get us going. We'll give it another bash against the Czechs and hopefully get a good result.

"We're diappointed about the result today but I'm sure that come Wednesday we'll be raring to go again."
