Sunderland won the first of their four must-win matches in the Northern Division with a crushing 11-0 victory over Aston Villa.
After two games without a win, the Wearsiders need nothing less than maximum points from the last four matches in order to pip OOH Lincoln to the title and they never looked back after Natalie Gutteridge nabbed a quickfire hat-trick inside three minutes - goals via her left foot, right foot and head. Strike partner Sophie Williams also netted three times inside seven minutes before the break and in the second half, the duo added a further goal each whilst Kelly McDougall contributed a double and Jordan Nobbs completed the scoring.
The match was Sunderland's last before they play Arsenal in the F.A.Women's Cup Final on 4th May.
Newcastle Utd went back into third place by going one better than their local rivals - scoring twelve without reply past Rotherham Utd whose relegation was confirmed by the defeat. Melanie Reay led the scoring by netting five first half goals and a penalty after the break, whilst Naomi Robson weighed in with a first half hat-trick. Substitute Bethanie Gardener netted twice and the rout was completed by Kelly Ridley.
Leicester City can still finish in the top three in their first season in the league, keeping their hopes alive by winning 3-2 at Tranmere Rovers. Natasha Meade fired Leicester in front after 13 minutes with Tranmere drawing level after the break through a Gaynor Collins header. Remi Allen restored Leicester's lead with a 30-yard strike and Meade swept home her second with four minutes remaining. Tranmere never gave up and Lyndsey Rodgers pulled a goal back but sadly the Birkenhead club - once regular members of the top flight and providers of numerous top quality players - are condemned to relegation.
