England under-17 were beaten 2-0 by Spain the opening match of their UEFA Under-17 Championship qualifying group. Having reached the final stages of the Championships last summer, and then the semi finals of the FIFA Under-17 World Cup in New Zealand, Lois Fidler's side are bidding to continue their fine form at this level but face an uphill task as only the group winners will qualify. Despite dominating possession in the first half, Spain made England pay with two clinical finishes either side of the hour mark through Amaya Lambarri and Esther Gonzalez and held on for a crucial opening victory. Next up for England is the Czech Republic on Tuesday, they defeated group hosts Belgium in the other game. England: Juliana Draycott, Jemma Rose, Sophie Halliday (sub Alex Greenwood 53mins), Jessica Holbrook, Laura Thacker, Katherine Nutman, Rebecca Jane, Lucy Staniforth, Danielle Carter, Lauren Bruton, Lara Fay (sub Nakita Parris 59mins). Subs not used: Mary Earps, Kirsty Linnett, Ashleigh Goddard, Lucy Gunton-Jones.
