Whilst the top two in the Northern Division were involved in the F.A.Women's Cup quarter finals on Sunday, Newcastle Utd took the chance to catch up ground with a 5-0 victory away to Preston North End. Rachel Furness fired the Magpies ahead early on and Sarah Wilson marked her debut by scoring the second midway through the first half. After the break, Melanie Reay doubled Newcastle's advantage by scoring twice and Furness rounded off the victory as she completed her brace. Manchester City kept their hopes alive, thanks to a 3-1 success at Tranmere Rovers. Becky Lee netted the only goal of the first half for City and although Vicky Abbott equalised after the break, goals in a seven minute spell by Elle Turner and Katie Brusell ensured that City stay in fourth place, eight points off the pace but with two games in hand. Aston Villa lifted themselves into fifth by storming to a 9-1 victory over Rotherham Utd. Kim Farrow led the scoring for Villa with a hat-trick and there was a goal apiece from Natalie Courtney, Natalie Gibson, Kelly Saggs, Emma Follis, Natasha Merritt and goalkeeper Nicola Kuch. Sheffield Wednesday are off the bottom of the table after they notched up a crucial 2-1 victory over Curzon Ashton. After Becky Lee had given Curzon an early lead, Wednesday hit back to level the scores ahead of the break through recent signing Tanya Rich. Midway through the second half, substitute Tania Marsden settled matters in Wednesday's favour by scoring the winning goal to lift her side out of the bottom three.
