The festive and new year period is always the time when players come back home to the Isle of Man from studies with Corinthians welcoming back Helen Thomas and Anna Quayle.
Peel too saw the return of Erin Callister and although they did lose 15-0 in the corresponding league fixture, there was to be no repeat of the same scoreline. Corinthians were always in command with Leonie Roberts in fine goalscoring form, netting on four occasions and finishing comfortable 7-1 winners.
The Whites moved the ball intelligently, executing a number of quick, short one-twos as Corinthians were relentless in an opening spell. It only took four minutes to find the Peel net, Sarah Morley and Anna Quayle combining to find Roberts who rolled home the opening goal into the bottom left corner. With Jade Burden creating havoc, she curled an effort narrowly wide of the target but was involved to make it 2-0, barging in from the left to set up Roberts to score.
Sarah O'Reilly yet again showed excellent vision, scoring Corinthians' third. 30 yards away from the opposing goal, the captain exquisitely lifted her effort over the stranded Kelly and into the roof of the net.
Last season's Isle of Man Floodlit Cup winners finished the first half with a flourish, Quayle's diagonal pass found Roberts in space to tuck away their fourth and Kerford pirouetted her way only the left-bye-line, her cutback was received by Roberts who drove home into the roof of the net
The second half failed to live up to expectations from that of the first and was more flat than champagne left over from a New Year's party. Kerry Beattie's goal line headed clearance denied Burden but there was a moment of class for Corinthians' sixth. Helen Thomas's excellent crossfield pass released Sarah Kerford on the left to guide her effort past Kelly and into the net.
The westerners did find the net from an unexpected source - a lack of communication between goalkeeper Rachel Quirk and a defender saw the ball steered into her own net. However Burden quickly restored their six goal cushion a minute later, receiving Roberts's pass to chip home their seventh.
Corinthians could have added more towards the end as Burden hit the post and Roberts forced a good save from Kelly. Two of their youngsters came close, Sasha Preskey ventured from right back and drove a shot straight at Kelly and Lauren Christian steered a shot wide.
Laxey started their Floodlit Cup campaign with a 5-1 win over Ramsey. Sarah Houghton opened the scoring for the Miners but Ramsey equalised before half time through Natalie Davies' long range effort. Laxey restored their lead after the break through Kerry Lockwood with Christian Sutton making it 3-1 following a melee from a corner. Sutton netted her second at the far post following a Rebecca Kirk cross and Rhiannon Brew grabbed their fifth through a good individual effort.
