 Women's Football News 13 Oct 2008

Carla keeps Lincoln ahead - 13 Oct 2008 - Women's Football NewsA second half goal kept OOH Lincoln as leaders of the Northern Division as they defeated Reading FC Women 1-0.

Carla Ward converted a Kate Wooldridge free kick from close range with fifteen minutes for the only goal of the game which means the Lady Imps remain one point clear at the top.

Sunderland stay in second place after scoring nine without reply away to Curzon Ashton. The two teams had shared a 2-2 draw the previous Sunday but this time, Sunderland were in rampant mood. Nicola Devine gave them a third minute lead which was doubled by Natalie Gutteridge, and a Sophie Williams and Gutteridge extended the advantage to five goals at the break. Williams completed her hat-trick just before the hour mark with Kelly McDougall, Lucy Staniforth and an own goal completing the tally.

Third placed Manchester City got back to winning ways with a 3-0 success at home to Rotherham Utd. The goals came in an eight minute spell during the first half, Katie Brusell scoring twice in quick succession just after the half hour and Sarah Penney added the third.

Newcastle Utd notched up their fifth win in a row to stay just off the pace, coming away from Sheffield Wednesday with a 2-1 victory. Lauren Weedy put them in front in the fourteenth minute with Wednesday equalising through Laura Naylor, before Rachel Furness scored the winner ten minutes into the second half.

Two second half goals saw Aston Villa come from behind to beat Preston North End 2-1 and move themselves into fifth place. Gemma Watson gave Preston a first half lead before Villa hit back after the break, Kelly Clarke levelling the scores and Kimberley Farrow netting the winning goal, eight minutes from time.
