Newquay made up for last season's defeat in the South West League Bristol Soccerworld Cup Final by winning the trophy this time around and completing the League and Cup 'double' in an enthralling game played in variable weather conditions at Cullompton.
Newquay settled down the quicker of the two sides and dominated the opening stages, looking threatening down both flanks and they were rewarded by taking the lead in the 13th minute.
After goalkeeper Charley Curnow had come off her line to clear under pressure from Lara Ferris, Newquay went back on the attack and Danni Salt's pass released Jodie Newark down the left. From her resulting low cross, the Academy defence hesitated and Corinne Potts stole in to slot the ball home.
Salt sent a dipping shot just over the bar as Newquay continued to press but Academy started to come into the game and won a free kick just outside the area, Alice Durston's shot being charged down. However it was not too long until they were back on level terms, Lucy Dinham unleashing a 25-yard strike which gave Curnow no chance.
Newquay tried to hit back quickly and it took a good interception from Briony Harris to deny Potts as she broke into the area. Emma Pritchard returned the ball across goal for Potts who was unable to divert her shot on target at the far post. Potts and Pritchard each sent 30-yard free kicks over the bar as Newquay finished the half on top but the scores were level at half time.
The early stages of the second half were evenly contested but it was Newquay who were to make the breakthrough just before the hour mark. After good work from Salt and Emma Pritchard, Helen Stubbs, who had just come on as a substitute, fired in a shot which was saved by Amber Thornell but Potts followed up to slide in the rebound for her second goal.
Maeve Clarke saw a header saved by Thornell as Newquay continued to carve out the better chances. At the other end, Academy tried hard to create openings with striker Leanne Burge particularly industrious but they could not make headway against a strong Newquay defence which stood firm.
Potts was just off target with a shot on the turn as the game, which had started in sunshine, was suddenly being played in a snow flurry which made things difficult for both teams.
The snow relented as the match went into the last ten minutes and Potts again went close to her hat-trick, this time cutting in from the left where her shot was well saved by Thornell, the rebound fell to Emma Pritchard but she was denied by a crucial block from Kerrie Smith. Moments later, Sophie Weedon drilled a shot just fast the far post as Newquay sought a killer third goal.
Academy weathered the storm and threw players forward in a late attempt to take the game into extra time. A Jaz Thomas pass almost let in Annie Pritchard but she was unable to keep the ball in play and, as the game went into extra time, Lucy Bennett's long ball found Burge in the area but she lifted her shot just over the bar.
