Charlton Athletic's long tenure in the top flight is over after their 2-1 defeat away to Cardiff City confirmed their relegation.
Despite an improved run of results since Christmas, the Addicks had still not registered a league win but looked to be on their way when Tonje Smedholen gave them a second half lead. However Cardiff fought back strongly and goals in the last six minutes from Kayleigh Greening and Nicola Cousins gave the South Wales side three precious points to keep their survival hopes alive.
Meanwhile it was business as usual for Arsenal who chalked up their 50th league victory in a row when beating Birmingham City 3-0. However they were made to work hard for the points by the Blues despite Jayne Ludlow putting them ahead after ten minutes. Two goals in the last eight minutes from Lianne Sanderson, which takes her to the top of the goalscoring charts, ensured that the Gunners now lead the table by a whopping sixteen points.
Everton closed the gap on second placed Bristol Academy with a 3-0 win against Chelsea. All of the goals came in the first half, Jody Handley putting the Toffees ahead after ten minutes before Fara Williams and Rachel Unitt went on to complete the scoring.
