Nottingham Forest maintained their Northern Division title push with a hard earned 3-1 win away to Newcastle Utd.
Andi Bell got Forest off to a flying start as she sped through to give them the lead but Newcastle were back on level terms just three minutes later, in-form striker Melanie Reay scoring from the penalty spot after Forest captain Beth Bailey had been penalised for handball. Newcastle took the game to Forest but were unable to make another breakthrough and two goals in the last twenty minutes from Bell gave Forest a priceless victory which takes them three points clear once more.
In the other game to be played, Sunderland ensured that they will finish in third place by winning 3-2 at Sheffield Wednesday. Natalie Gutteridge netted twice for Sunderland in the opening half hour before Beth Gingell pulled Wednesday back into the game ahead of the interval. Gingell then scored her second, ten minutes into the second half, to bring the scores level but Sunderland scored the decisive goal with twenty minutes remaining through a powerful finish from Abby Holmes.
