Bacup Borough won the Lancashire County League Cup with a 1-0 victory over Morecambe in the Final at Leyland.
In pouring rain and a blustery wind, Morecambe had the better of the early stages but Bacup grew stronger from that point, creating a number of chances which were well saved or passed up by their forwards. Lucy Molloy and Nat Turner both went close as Borough sought the opening goal of the game.
Bacup got the breakthrough as half time approached, a clearance from the back was flicked on by Kim Bain and Lauren Brierley raced through on goal before sliding her shot past the advancing goalkeeper for a composed finish. Morecambe tried to hit back with a quick reply but Bacup held out to go into the interval with a one-goal lead.
A fast pace before the break gave way to a slower tempo in the second half as the conditions began to take their toll on the players. Morecambe pushed forward in search of the equaliser but Bacup stood firm and goalkeeper Sophie Sasimowicz was well protected.
Bacup could have added to their lead as the half wore on, with Bain and Brierley both going close late on, but at the other end they managed to keep things tight and they closed the game out to secure their first trophy.
After the game, a delighed Bacup manager Adam Brierley said: "As manager of this team I am so glad to see the girls win a trophy, we deserve it and our hard work has finally paid off. Tonight's game showed the meaning of team work, and girls did themselves proud, 100% commitment and effort,
"A big thank you to Brent Peters and the staff at Bacup Borough Football Club, and Team sponsors Fielden factors, The Buck and Earth Moving Components for supporting us through this campaign."
