The spoils were shared in Mafra, near Lisbon as Portugal and Wales played out a 1-1 draw in their friendly international.
The game was a red letter day for Keynsham Town defender Kath Morgan, who became the first Wales women's footballer to win 50 caps for her country. She was made captain for the day.
Wales manager Adrian Tucker used the game as a warm-up for two vital UEFA Championship games that are upcoming in February against Belgium at Barry (Sunday 17th February) and the Netherlands at Newport (Wednesday 20th February). Returning to the side after injury was midfielder Michelle Green and Joanne Edwards led the attack.
It was Edwards who gave Wales the lead on 18 minutes from a well worked set piece, flicking a header home just inside the post. In fact Wales dominated for the whole of the opening 45 minutes and should have scored more but a 1-0 lead was all that the team had to show at half time.
In the second half, Portugal came back strongly and it was no surprise when they equalised after 69 minutes from Carla Couto, who took advantage of some sloppy defending by Wales. Both sides then made regular substitutions that tended to make the game somewhat disjointed.
There was still time five minutes before the end for Wales striker Gwennan Harries to shoot over the bar when it looked easier to score.
The final score of 1-1 meant honours even and Wales took the chance to give debuts to Sally Wade of Watford and Cardiff City's Lauren Townsend. (www.faw.org.uk)
