An FAW Under-17 side drew 0-0 with the touring Australian Schools side on the astroturf pitch at Cwmbran Stadium on Sunday.
The game was played in difficult conditions throughout with the wind and rain making for something of a lottery. However, both sides gave good accounts of themselves.
For Wales manager Terry Boyle, there were many positive points from a young squad of girls, all of whom will be eligible for the side next season as well as this current one. The side was captained by central defender Jasmin Dutton of Tranmere Rovers, who was very strong throughout, and Melanie Thomas of Aberystwyth Town was also very assured in goal.
All members of the squad played at some point in the game against a very talented Australian side who were all, on average, a year older than their Welsh counterparts. The game had earlier been switched from the Sobell Centre in Aberdare to the Stadium in Cwmbran due to the heavy rainfall in South Wales over the last few days. The game was designated as a representative match, with no caps being awarded.
A word must be said for the excellent handling of the match by the three female officials: Susan Jones (Newtown), Trish Gardiner (Caersws) and Karen Williams (Oswestry). Finally the FAW would like to extend thanks to the Cwmbran Stadium staff and management for their help in hosting the game at such short notice. (www.faw.org.uk)
