Newcastle United WFC have this week received £4,800 from the Northern Rock Foundation to secure the delivery of six free football fundays for girls aged 6 to 14 years of age in 2008.
The excellent development work carried out in 2006 and 2007 at grassroots level has been given the go ahead to reach even more young players throughout 2008.
Over 1,000 female players of all abilities attended the previous twelve football fundays, the well structured coaching days, delivered by the Newcastle United women`s first team squad with ongoing support from the Newcastle City Council Football Development scheme, have all been very well received by young players and their parents throughout the region.
At a recent Christmas Funday, run in conjunction with North Shields juniors FC at the North Shields JJB Soccerdome, 40 young players taking part were taught various techniques and skills, with members of the Newcastle Girls FA Centre of Excellence under-16 squad on hand to demonstrate how to be a team player in the small sided games.
Rob Atkin, Newcastle Head Coach, said: "This is fantastic news for the ongoing development in our region in 2008. Lots of female players have taken up the sport and are now active members of the new clubs being formed throughout the County. Without the financial support of the Northern Rock Foundation award, we could not provide these opportunities for youngsters to get involved and have lots of fun as they learn."
