A late goal from Karen Carney gave Arsenal a 1-0 victory over a determined Bristol Academy side and moved the Gunners into second place.
With Laura Barnes-Ellis still injured, Academy were forced to field Stef Curtis in goal but the Republic of Ireland international gave a fine performance in an unaccustomed position.
Arsenal were hampered by the loss of Julie Fleeting who was taken to hospital with a gashed knee and it looked as though it might not be their night when a firm Katie Chapman header struck the underside of the bar and stayed out.
However Academy's resistance was broken in the dying minutes as Lianne Sanderson slotted a through ball into the path of Carney who drilled home a left foot shot to keep her side's winning run going.
Blackburn Rovers are also two points off the top, following their 2-1 win against Leeds Utd.
Karen Burke gave Blackburn a fifteenth minute lead against her former club and the league's leading scorer Katie Anderton added to her tally shortly before half time. Sue Smith gave Leeds renewed hope by scoring a second half penalty but Blackburn held out to return themselves back into the top three.
