West Auckland Town v Manchester City - 2 Dec 2007 - Women's Football NewsF.A.Women's Cup - Road to the Final
West Auckland Town held their nerve to win a penalty shootout in their Second Round tie against Blackpool Wren Rovers and they have been rewarded with a plum home tie against Premier League opponents.
The Northern Combination side will take on Manchester City who will enter the competition for the first time at this stage. City will be approaching the match in good form after an improving run of results in recent weeks, which have taken them towards a mid-table position.
Manchester City Ladies was formed in the summer of 1987 and joined Division Two of the North West League in the 1989-1990 season. After a difficult few years. growth was rapid, and by the summer of 1997 the club was able to establish a junior section for the first time in its history.
City were promoted to the Premier League in 2001 after winning the Northern Combination title and they have retained that status ever since. During 2000-2001 the club experienced the most successful season in its history, with four teams winning their respective leagues, one doing a league and cup double and the under-13s completing an unprecedented treble. Manchester City Ladies have The FA Charter Standard Club Award for both the Junior and Adult sections and were the first-all female club to achieve this in Manchester.
The side is managed by Leigh Wood, who is in his first season in the role. Lindsay Savage is captain and a key player in midfield, the likes of Kelly McLellan, Levi Wensley and Ellena Turner are important squad members but City will be missing Laura Gligan and talented winger Katie Brusell on the day.
West Auckland Town FC will host the game in which City will start as favourites due to form and status but West Auckland are having a good season and will be confident of causing an upset.
