Watford survived a late fightback to narrow the gap on leaders Bristol Academy to three points, thanks to a 4-3 victory over Doncaster Rovers Belles.
After Liz Hanson gave the Belles a tenth minute lead, Watford hit back strongly with Emma Thomas equalising before three goals in the five minute spell before half time. Ashlee Hincks netted the first from the penalty spot with Helen Lander and Hayley Kemp adding the others. Goals in the last fifteen minutes from Vicky Exley and Sarah Owen ensured a nervous end to the game for Watford but they held on to keep up their fine start to the season.
Blackburn Rovers are just a point adrift in third place after scoring six without reply against Charlton Athletic. Katie Anderton put them ahead after eleven minutes with Natalie Preston and Caroline Dixon adding further goals before half time. Anderton and Dixon completed their doubles after the break and Stacey Daniel rounded off the scoring in the dying minutes.
Leeds Utd made it two wins from three games and are in the top half of the table by beating Birmingham City 2-1. Sue Smith, fresh from England duty 24 hours earlier, gave Leeds the lead in the first half and, although Amy McCann equalised for the Blues midway through the second half, Olivier Thackrey netted the decisive goal seven minutes later.
