Bristol Academy have moved into top spot in the National Division following a 3-1 victory at Blackburn Rovers.
After a goalless first half, Cheryl Williams netted her first league goal for the club to put Academy ahead before Kerry Bartlett and Gwennan Harries added further strikes. Caroline Dixon renewed Blackburn's hopes by pulling a goal back but Academy held on to replace Rovers in pole position.
Watford notched their second win in a row to sit in second place but they needed to withstand a fightback from Birmingham City before emerging as 3-2 winners. Helen Lander netted twice in the opening fifteen minutes and Ashlee Hincks quickly added a third, but the Blues came back strongly after the break and two goals in three minutes, from Heather Scheuber and Maz Ballard, reduced the arrears. Ballard hit the bar late on as Birmingham piled on the pressure but they could not get level and Watford gained revenge for their opening day defeat at the hands of the Blues.
It was a day of mixed emotions for the Jones twins as Cardiff City and Liverpool each picked up their first point of the season when they shared a 1-1 draw. Kelly Jones gave Liverpool the lead on the half hour but, amazingly, an own goal from twin sister Vicky Jones ensured a share of the spoils for Cardiff.
