Reading triumph in Denmark
 Women's Football News 24 Aug 2007
Reading triumph in Denmark - 24 Aug 2007South Reading Vixens triumphed at the recent Denmark soccer festival held in Copenhagen.
The girls, who competed in the 1992 age category, won their group winning all seven of their games against physical Swedish and Danish opposition scoring 29 goals and only conceding 1.By winning the group they went straight to a final against the second placed Swedish team Balinge IF. In a tight, evenly contested game the vixens edged it with a superb solo effort from striker Deanna Peters just before half time. Deanna was the teams leading tournament goal scorer notching 13 goals.
Fulham academy defender Louise Delaney earned the Vixens player of the tournament accolade with consistently good performances. Olivia Davis was presented with the winner's trophy on a stage draped in a giant England flag.
Manager Andrew Davis said: "This was without doubt my proudest moment in football - the girls worked hard all week, we made sure that our preparation was first class and we watched the players' diets and put curfews in place at night time and despite the regime, we all had a great time. In the end it all paid dividends."
This was the last time that the squad will play under the Vixens name as they will become Reading Royals ladies under-16 development squad from next season, so winning a tournament abroad was a fitting end to the success that the squad has enjoyed since they were established in 2001. The 2006-2007 campaign has seen them win no fewer than six league, cup and tournament trophies including beating a team consisting of Millwall Girls Centre of Excellence players in a tournament final at Carterton in June.
The team has come a long way from since its formation back in 2001 winning many trophies along the way. The team has been run by Andrew and Debra Davis for the last two seasons. Andrew said: "We took over what was a very successful team which was winning everything at the level of football that they were competing in and recognised that we needed to provide new challenges. A number of our players were very much border Centre of Excellence standard and unfortunately I have found with girls football that finding tough challenges is very difficult.
"We have invited a number of centres of excellences to play us in friendlies but all have declined for one reason or another. We probably get about eight games from twenty in a season where we are stretched and have to be at our very best to get a positive result which can be frustrating. The team competes in the Surrey County Girls League which is one of the strongest non academy leagues in the South of England and plays its home games at Palmer Park Stadium in Reading and provides match programmes for some games and refreshments. We have laid our stall out in the best way we can and are constantly looking to improve the coaching and facilities available to young female players. We like to think that academies are not the be all and end all of girls football. More details about our club can be found on www.rrlfc.co.uk."
