Katie Anderton made a blistering start to the new season with a stunning five-goal haul as Blackburn Rovers defeated Cardiff City 6-0.
Anderton netted 17 league goals for the Lancashire side last season and picked up where she left off, bagging a first half hat-trick before adding a further two early in the second half before former Leeds midfielder Natalie Preston marked her debut by scoring the sixth.
Bristol Academy withstood a fightback from Liverpool before emerging as 4-3 victors from a thrilling opening day contest. Kerry Bartlett gave Academy a second minute lead and scored her second on the half hour, two minutes after Corinne Yorston had doubled their advantage. Jade Thomas then replied either side of the break and Jo Traynor headed Liverpool level just after the hour mark but it was Academy who had the final say in the dying minutes as Bartlett latched on to a reverse pass from Stef Curtis to slot home the winner, for her hat-trick.
The other newly promoted side, Watford, were also beaten in their opening match, going down 1-0 at home to Birmingham City. Kerys Harrop settled the match with the only goal of the game, midway through the second half.
