England were in action against Sheffield FC Ladies on Wednesday night - well almost!
No less than eight members of the squad for next month's World Cup in China were among the Arsenal players who helped Sheffield celebrate the club's 150th anniversary with an entertaining match in which home goalkeeper Caz Whiteman excelled with several fine saves.
Arsenal, domestic treble winners and UEFA Women's Cup holders, were kept at bay for the first quarter, but went into the interval 9-0 up. A final score of 12-0 reflected well on the hosts given some of Arsenal's high scoring victories in their league matches last season.
Karen Carney, with a hat-trick, Jayne Ludlow (2), Kelly Smith (2), Lianne Sanderson (2), Alex Scott (2) and Faye White scored for Arsenal whose only England absentee was Mary Phillip.
Whiteman went off injured near the end and Arsenal substitute keeper Rebecca Spencer guested for Sheffield, making a couple of notable saves but was unable to prevent Ludlow, who began the scoring, completing a round dozen.
Sheffield manager Helen Mitchell was delighted with the day and commented that the Arsenal players were excellent ambassadors and that all her players were honoured to have taken part in the occasion.
