Flyers power to Cup progress

Winchester City Flyers 7 Fleet Town 1

Winchester City Flyers moved confidently into the Third Qualifying Round of the Women's FA Cup with a 7-1 home win over Fleet Town, earning a trip to Mangotsfield United on the 4th October.

Fleet competed well in the first half but were undone by the range of attacking options available from the home bench, especially from Annie Northwood who completed a second half hat-trick.

 

The opening fifteen minutes were fairly even but then Fleet conceded the opener from a deflected Charlie Snelling shot and chances started to mount up. Keeper Belle Hicks made a super save to deny Chelsie Hay but was beaten on 28 minutes when Hay was set up by good work from Emily Wernham.

 

Abbie Green scored a delightful third just after the break, her first for the senior team before Avery Tolley replied for the visitors, finishing well past Lauren Sayler from a tight angle.

 

Home substitutes then took centre stage as the score mounted at regular intervals. Northwood converted good work by Freya Twigg on 65 minutes, then Sian Wylie added the fifth as Green turned provider on 73 minutes.

 

Flyers were brimming with confidence now using the pace and inventiveness in their youthful front line to pull the visitors out of their defensive shape. Northwood added two further late goals to complete a 40-minute treble with neat finishes to give the final score a somewhat harsh look.

 

The strength in depth of the Flyers squad was well illustrated against their Southern Region League Premier Division rivals who battled well and created enough good attacking moves to give them hope for the season ahead despite the severe scoreline.
